Slut Walk Winnipeg 2011 - Protest Against Sexual Violence was an Awesome Success!

Now don't be upset about the controversial name of the event! This event is a movement to protect women who have been victims of sexual crimes, women who have been called 'sluts', and to protect and raise awareness for issues such as rape, and forced sexual behavior. The name is quite brilliant as it raises so much awareness because of the title, which is it's biggest marketing tool. The name of the walk came about when a police officer told women they could avoid being attacked by not "dressing like sluts." The word "slut" has a very broad definition and is used in order to pass judgement and shame on women. This judgment further victimizes women who have been (or even may be) sexually assaulted, and those who participated in the walk were making a stand against victim-blaming, or the passing of responsibility from offender to victim. Women have the right to consent, and this walk simply promotes that.

Many of the speakers were raped in their teens, and had no idea they could even be raped by a parent or trusted elder, or that they might be held responsible for the actions of an offender. It was quite an eye opener for us who attended, and we will only encourage movements like this in the future."

We would like to thank Gaz and The Best Defense Program for bringing us in to help with this project. He teaches a women self defense program and can be reached at http://thebestdefenseprogram.wordpress.com.

To say the least, the walk against Sexual Violence was a huge success! The speeches were moving and the crowd was amazing. Over a thousand people showed up to support the great cause. Thank you to everyone who supported the first annual Slut Walk in Winnipeg, it really provided a platform for support of those who have been victims of rape and sexual violence.
